Self-Defence/Vee-Arnis Jitsu

Summary

I'm more interested in the non-aggressive philosophy of Aikido…but NY is/was NY.

Hence my appreciation of Vee Arnis Jitsu, which I studied for a while (not enough!) under David Jones who was taking over from Professor Vee while he was still alive.

The system incorporates the stick defenses and techniques of Filipino Arnis and the grappling methods of Japanese Jiu-Jitsu.

Ten Commandments.

  • EVALUATE THE SITUATION
    * THE THREE FOOT RULE
    * START FROM A NON THREATENING MANNER
    * CONTROL THE SITUATION
    * MOTION CAUSES MOTION
    * USE THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE
    * CLOSEST HAND, CLOSEST TARGET
    * CHANGE THE FOCUS
    * HIGH AND LOW CONCEPT
    * YOU CAN MOVE FASTER FORWARD THAN YOUR OPPONENT CAN MOVE BACKWARDS
  • 5: White Belt
  • 4: Yellow Belt
  • 3: Yellow with Black Stripe Belt
  • 2: Red Belt
  • 1: Red with Black Stripe Belt
  • Black Belt

The weird japanase-y stuff…

  • Osu! (pronounced Oss!) 1)
  • “Hochidosh”(?) = (dashi=stance) (deshi=student) .
  • “Casscade”(?) = to end the above movement and back into a stance of attention with your feet together.
  • “Sensei tachi dosh”= (sensei) (standing) (?): an order of respect to the Sensei (Teacher) or Shihan(Master Teacher).
