Summary
A Microsoft technology for encrypting whole hard-drives.
- Advantages:
- I believe the encyrption is tied to the hardware. You can't just use the HD in another computer.
- Considerations:
- IT:AD:TrueCrypt development was stopped at some point, and the devs recommended that users convert to IT:AD:Bitlocker as they considered it offered better security.
- BitLocker encrypts all personal and system files on the drive where Windows is installed, or on data drives on the same computer.
- If one user unlocks it, all other users on the system can use the hard-drive.
- It works on the whole hard-drive – and is not to be used on individual files.
- See IT:AD:EFS
- Disadvantages:
- Whereas IT:AD:TrueCrypt could be create a virtual hard-drive, I don't think IT:AD:Bitlocker can do that.
