Summary

'Understand' is a strong term, that may never be fully applicable to Word. Let's just try to 'Advance' understanding on them.

Let's get something off our collective chest first: let's point out that whatever latent productivity Word's design team intended to release, they failed. Miserably. It's a valiant attempt at being powerful, and came out as a boondoggle for the majority of users. Maybe there's some PNG native culture out there that hates indentation to work and they are happy with it. We are not.

Let's also admit that there are so many users out there, that they can't easily remedy the situation. So to figure out how to do our work, we had better figure out how they envisioned – strike that – they assembled the functionality.


If you have ever cut/paste HTML text from the web into a Word document, you may have made several observations: * Most of the Text will be imported as style Normal, with inline formatting (eg: Bold/Italic) rather than being styled to Styles such as 'Strong'/'Emphasis'. Although Microsoft highly recommends users to use Styles rather than Inline – but they still havn't got it right.
