IT:AD:SharePoint:Concepts:MetaData

* Metadata is Data about Data * Metadata is for Classification

  • Content to Content (Relation/Contextual/Hinting/etc.)
  • Content to People (Personalization)
  • Findability (Search & Organization)
    • eg: Page that finds all things tagged with XXX

* Two kinds of MetaData:

  • Folksonomy = Tags created by End Users, on the fly
  • Taxonomy = Tags created by admins, etc. creating structure of site

In SP 2007, had:

  • Content Type
    • A Site Content Type is a Container for Site Columns
    • Create by:
      • [Site]/[SiteActions]/[Site Settings]/[Modify All Site Settings]
      • [Galleries]/[Site Content Types]/Create
      • Name, Description, etc.
      • Select Parent ContentType
        • Note that Special Content Types group contains content types that change the behavior of your list or library when added.
      • Select Parent Content Type
      • Select Group
        • Done.

In SP 2010, have the same, plus:

  • Term Stores
    • A Container/Set of a Term Sets, which is a Container/Set of Terms
    • A Term Set (eg: 'Topics') could be contained by Term Store ('Corp Topics')
    • A Term can be just a Tag (eg: Topic A, Topic B, Topic C)
  • Managed Metadata
    • KeyWorkds
      • Keywords
      • Enterprise Keywords

How this all comes together is that the first time you create a List, you just create a list, without thinking about it. In the background, a ContentType is created (containing Site Columns).

A more formal way, and less mangled, process is to Site Admin, and create a Term Store first.
