IT:AD:Performance Counters:HowTo:Create a Data Collector Set

Summary

A Data Collector Set is a set of zero or more (just using one is quite common) Data Collectors, that are all triggered on the same schedule.

The Data Collector Set is incomplete in itself as it does not define what to listen to: it's primary purpose is to define the Schedule on when to start collecting data, and how long to keep on sampling data. Instead it is the individual Data Collectors within the set that define what they are collecting (which Performance Counters) and where the results are to be placed.

Another way of putting it is:

a Data Collector Set with no Data Collectors will run on its schedule as intended…but won't be collecting any data. ie. A Data Collector Set without at least one Data Collector in its set is pretty useless.

  • Start perfmon
  • Navigate and select Data Collector Sets/User Defined/New/Data Collector Set

Once you have defined a Data Collector Set, you can add at least one Data Collector:
