IT:AD:Google Apps:HowTo:Configure email and aliases
Notes
Domains
Domains are managed via Google Apps, outside of Google Mail.
- Ie, from Google Apps Mail, Click the menu's GearBox to get the Settings Dropdown, and select
Manage this Domain
. - Once in Google Apps Settings, click the Hamburger on the left, and Select
Domains
. - From there you can
Add/Remove Domains
as secondary domains to the primary domain (corp.com
).
The process is more or less:
* Add the new domain (corpB.com
)
* You'll be shown an entry that you need to add as a TXT record in your DNS.
* In Your DNS provider (eg: DYN, NOIP, Namecheap, etc.) enter the TXT record: eg: Host:@
Value:google-site-verification=hgbMV3y9F2AINoFZXdXCRKqtbseKTG1GLV9Hl89s9tU
TTL:Automatic
* Wait a moment for it to propagate, then Click Verify.
- Note: I've had it fail up to … 1, 5 minutes later.
Domain Aliases
There are two places to manage Email Aliases. From within Google Apps Settings → Apps → Gmail → Email Addresses.
* It only allows to create aliases for the primary Domain (corp.com
)
Personal Aliases
You can also set Aliases from a User's Settings.
- ie, from Google Apps GMail, Click the menu's GearBox to get the Settings Dropdown, and select
Settings
. - Select the
Accounts
tab - Add/Remove from the
Send Email As
section.- In most cases, I select
Treat as an Alias
because I want email sent to these secondary email addresses to show up in my mail box. - Note that they only will after I've set the MX records for these Domains.
MX Records
Bit of a Buried Mess.
- From Domain Settings (see above) → Apps → GMail → Advanced Settings → MX Records,
- Read the MX Setup records.
I think you know edit your MX Records as follows:
- 5 ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
- 10 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
- 15 ALT2.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM.
Testing Your aliases
It's good to know (from https://support.google.com/a/answer/1703601?hl=en) that
«To prevent clutter, Gmail doesn't route messages that you send to your own alias to your inbox. You can find the message in Sent Mail or All Mail. If you need to see messages sent to your alias in the Inbox, you can configure the alias as an alternate “Send mail as” address for your account.»
Rewriting Rules
No idea how they work. Tried every which way to capture and modify the subject of emails for foo.service@corp.com…but never worked.
