Summary

A Microsoft technology for encrypting single files.

  • Advantages:
    • Unlike IT:AD:Bitlocker does not need admin rights.
    • Can be used for doing individual files, rather than committing to the encryption of a whole drive.
    • EFS encrypts files based on the user account associated with it. If a computer has multiple users or groups, each can encrypt their own files independently.
  • Considerations:
    • EFS does not require or use any special hardware.
